Chops the lamb came to visit.

How lucky were we this week. Nevaeh brought her pet lamb Chops to visit us. Nevaeh said that Chops was 10 days old and when Chops was born their mum didn’t want them so they decided to keep him.  Chops was sleeping inside but has gotten a little noisy and now has been moved outside. Chops also needs to be bottle fed 3x a day,  it was 6! Everyone got to pat the lamb before he went home.  Thanks for the visit Chops, it was lovely to see you.

We have been learning about 2D and 3D Shapes.

Rumā Kererū have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We have learnt that shapes have faces, vertices and edges, apexes. Vertices are corners.

A cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges.

A sphere has 0 vertices and 0 edges and one curved surface.

A rectangular prism has 8 vertices, 12 edges and 6 faces.

A square based pyramid has 5 faces, five vertices and 8 edges.

A cone have 1 apex, a curved surface and a face.

We have been busy creating 3D shapes from nets and making a visual display.

Dress Up For Book Day Friday 22nd August.

Our Book Week was a hit! We kicked off with teachers sharing their favourite stories, inviting students to different classes each day to listen to these beloved tales. The excitement reached its peak on Friday when students arrived dressed as their favourite book characters. From wizards and witches to Minecraft characters, the playground was filled with creativity and fun. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of all the students as they paraded around the school, and the parent support made it even more special. Book Week truly brought our love for stories to life!

Harakeke Reading group working with magnets.

JJ61 The Invisible Force of Magnets

Reading group Harakeke have been learning about the invisible force of magnets. They have had lots of opportunities to explore and do investigations with magnets. This was a really fun and engaging activity. Students learnt that different sized magnets have stronger and weaker magnetic forces.  Students learnt that the magnets have a north pole and south pole, that you cannot put two of the same ends together as they repel each other. If the opposite ends meet they attract each other.

Students also had opportunities to investigate the magnets, make predictions then check their predictions to see if they were right.

Buddy Reading With Rūma Tui

Most Tuesday afternoons, Rūma Kererū buddy reads with Rūma Tui. This week, being the last week of term, we were treated to something a little different. Rūma Tui invited us into their learning space to share something they had been working on and were excited to show us. They had been busy creating board games!

The students designed some very bright, colourful, and creative games. They even made their own dice using a cube net template that had been part of their maths learning. It was fantastic to see the students spend time testing out the games before moving on to try another.

What great role models you were, Rūma Tui. Thank you for sharing your amazing work with us!

Rūma Kererū Makes Lanterns.

Kia ora, we are Rūma Kererū, a Year 3 & 4 class in Hokitika. We are a class of 22 students who love creating things connected to our learning. Recently, we crafted some amazing lanterns in our class. Some of our students took these to the local lantern parade, braving the cold winds, while others made cool lanterns to take home. The theme we used in our class was monsters, and the students had heaps of fun decorating them in their own unique styles. It was awesome to see the finished products. We think they turned out monstrously good!
